Having grown up in West Virginia, BJ had an affinity for the state and its people and a desire to return and minister there. While serving on staff at a church as a youth pastor he read Reggie McNeal's book, "The Present Future: 6 Tough Questions for the Church" It was that book that initially began an odyssey toward reformational thinking on the nature and purpose of the church. He spent time on staff with a church plant in Florida, moved to North Carolina in 2007 to finish seminary when his wife became pregnant with their second child, and began making monthly trips to West Virginia, praying about where to plant.
Mark and BJ became close friends during their freshman year of college. Over the last few years Mark served on staff with a church in St. Albans, WV. He and BJ began discussing the possibility of planting a church together as God began challenging them to reimagine what He wanted from His people in the world. In August 2007, while hanging out in Huntington during the annual Rib and Music Fest, they began praying about that city as a strategic location for church planting. Over the next 4 months their desire for planting and hearts for the city grew.
Around the summer of 2008 both Mark and BJ and their families moved to Huntington to see the city changed by reaching every man, woman, and child with the Gospel.
